Recently deceased, Stephen Sondheim was the king of Musical Theatre—spanning almost 60 years, his career is full of blockbuster hits. Sondheim has been praised for “Reinventing the American Musical” and tackling unexpected themes and darker aspects of the human experience, basically helping the Musical come of age. In this class we will be reviewing the legacy of his hits and his lesser-known shows, delving deep into his compositional and writing style, in an attempt to uncover the heartbeat of Sondheim’s genius.
